ALIVE Rescue is an animal rescue that protects the lives and the welfare of animals, taking on the responsibility to save and place any animal in need, no matter the age, breed or type. ALIVE Rescue provides 100% medical, behavioral, and physical support for our rescues, opening the doors at The Big Barn in Salem, WI in 2023. ALIVE Rescue has evolved into a homegrown brand, expanding organically, with a life of its own and a steadily growing following that seems to remain steadfast.

Animal Shelter Manager

Location: Salem, WI (In person)

Full/Part: Full time (40 hours per week)

 

We are seeking a Shelter Manager to join the ALIVE Rescue family during this exciting time. The Shelter Manager will serve as the point person for all ALIVE Rescue Big Barn ("Shelter") staff and volunteers at all levels.

Who You Are…

  • An individual with a minimum of two years experience in an animal shelter environment, veterinarian clinic, or dog daycare/boarding facility

  • Someone with previous management experience

  • A strong leader; someone with strong leadership skills

  • Considered to have, “excellent dog skills,” as they are a must for this role

  • Cool under pressure and able to handle dogs with variable behaviors ranging from easy to extremely difficult; behavioral issues will include shyness, fearfulness, and reactivity

  • Open to working with all dogs: dogs with health concerns/conditions, all sizes, breeds, all energy levels…any dog!

  • Proficient on the computer when it comes to the basics: checking e-mails, Google calendar, Google shared documents, G-Suite, Excel spreadsheets, and shelter software/online database usage

  • Experienced and able to administer oral medication and subcutaneous fluids, as needed

  • A whiz when it comes to multitasking and managing multiple groups of volunteers at all levels

  • Someone who is knowledgeable of ALIVE Rescue’s adoption process, mission, policies, and procedures; passionate about the organization and what we do

  • Flexible and there for your colleagues, open to working weekends/holidays/and varying shift times

  • A licensed, insured driver with a reliable vehicle (not necessary w/ reliable transport)

 

This is a full-time, salary position, and will require approximately 40+ hours per week. The days and hours may vary. Weekends and some holidays will be required.

 

What You Will Do...

  • Shelter Shifts

    • Perform and ensure daily feeding, cleaning, medicating, and enrichment of the pet population are done in accordance to time frames and protocols.

    • Oversee Shelter resident playgroups.

    • Handle any emergencies or incidents that may arise at the Shelter

    • Monitor pet eating habits, behavior, and medical habits/issues and ensure documentation is given to the President, Medical Director, and Adoption and Foster Director.

    • Monitor Big Barn staff/volunteer schedule daily to ensure all shifts are covered with the appropriate number of staff/volunteers based on current Shelter residents.

  • Intake

    • Assess each new animal as it enters the Shelter.

    • Create suite cards for each Shelter resident in order to communicate pertinent information to staff/volunteers.

    • Conduct dog on dog testing to establish Shelter friends.

    • Administer monthly prevention as directed by the Medical Director.

    • Add animals to the chalkboard feeding wall / complete medication sheets / fit for harnesses and collar / give ID tag / insert micro-chips (if requested by Medical Director) / administer needed vaccinations (if requested by Medical Director).

    • Capture clear, high resolution photos to send to the Medical Director, website team, and social media team.

    • Assist with updating and validating information in ShelterLuv (rescue specific software) for each animal (for intake and throughout the “lifecycle” of the animal while in our care).

    • Provide detailed information about each Shelter resident to Adoption & Foster Manager to help with adoption and foster placement.

    • Coordinate needed vet visits for Shelter residents with Medical Director.

  • Staff/Volunteers​​

    • Recruit new volunteers.

    • Conduct a monthly volunteer orientation for potential new volunteers.

    • Work with President during the hiring process of all new staff.

    • Onboard and train all incoming staff and volunteers.

    • Implement Shelter volunteer tiers to ensure volunteers are properly matched with shelter residents based on their handling skills & experience.

    • Ensure staff/volunteers are adhering to Fear Free Shelter standards.

    • Create and implement volunteer incentive and award program

  • Animal Training/Enrichment

    • Implement existing dog training protocol for Shelter residents to staff/volunteers to ensure consistent training techniques.

    • Build upon existing enrichment program for Shelter residents and implement.

    • Coordinate Shelter resident field trips with approved volunteers.

    • Work with approved animal trainers, when needed, for specific dogs having issues.

  • Adoption Events / Meet and Greets

    • Assist President and Adoption & Foster Manager during bi-monthly on-site adoption events.

    • Conduct meet and greets with Shelter residents and potential new families.

Administrative/Social/Communications

  • Communication

    • Post volunteer pleas, as needed, through email and ALIVE Rescue Facebook Volunteer Group.

    • Utilize GroupMe to communicate important shift notes, animal information, emergencies, and updates to Big Barn Staff, President, Medical Director and Adoption/Foster Manager.

  • Manage Inventory

    • On a weekly basis, conduct a count of all inventory on hand. This includes dog/cat/rabbit food and supplies, cleaning supplies, office supplies, and anything else needed.

    • When inventory is running low, communicate with President to re-stock needed items to ensure supplies never run out.

  • Social Media

    • Work with the Social Media team to develop stories for Shelter residents.

    • Send high quality photos & videos to the Social Media team to promote Shelter residents for adoption and foster.

    • Work with President and Social Media team on different campaigns throughout the year to promote Shelter animals to the public and supporters.

  • Meetings

    • Attend weekly virtual meetings with Big Barn staff.

Animal Care Specialist

Location: Salem, WI (In person)

Full/Part: Part-time (16–20 hours per week)

  • Cool under pressure and able to handle dogs with variable behaviors ranging from easy to extremely difficult; behavioral issues will include shyness, fearfulness, and reactivity

  • Open to working with all dogs: dogs with health concerns/conditions, all sizes, breeds, all energy levels…any dog!

  • Experienced and able to administer oral medication, as needed

  • A whiz when it comes to multitasking and managing multiple groups of volunteers at all levels

  • Flexible and there for your colleagues, open to working weekends/holidays/and varying shift times

This is a part-time, non-exempt, hourly position, and will offer approximately 16–20 hours per week with plenty of opportunity for growth for the right candidate. The days and hours will vary depending on needed shift coverage. 

 

What You Will Do...

  • Shelter Shifts

    • Perform and ensure daily feeding, cleaning, medicating, and enrichment of the pet population are done in accordance to time frames and protocols.

    • Clean and disinfect all kennel and common areas based on the guidelines set including mopping, sweeping, laundry, dishes, and trash removal.

    • Monitor pet eating habits, behavior, and medical habits/issues and ensure documentation is given to the President, Medical Director, and Adoption and Foster Director.

    • Cover any shift not filled by team (current shifts are Monday – Sunday,  8 am – 12 pm, and 4 pm – 8 pm, 365 days per year). Holidays, weekends, and evenings required.

  • Shelter Upkeep

    • Sort through donations that come in and put away in appropriate locations.

    • Keep Adoption Center and Storage Units organized.

    • Ensure proper cleaning protocol for dog suites and other spaces.

  • Animal Training

    • Develop consistent protocol for hand signals to train the dogs and communicate this with the volunteers.

    • Work with animal trainers, when needed, for specific dogs having issues.
